Book Review: Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom

Tuesdays with Morrie is a heartwarming and deeply moving memoir by Mitch Albom, detailing his time spent with his former college professor, Morrie Schwartz. Written in a conversational and reflective tone, the book offers readers a glimpse into life’s most profound lessons, as shared by Morrie, who is grappling with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis), a terminal illness. The memoir chronicles their weekly meetings, held every Tuesday, where Mitch learns life lessons from his mentor, now in his final days.

Plot

The story begins when Mitch, a successful but unfulfilled sports journalist, reconnects with his old sociology professor, Morrie, after seeing him featured on a TV program discussing his battle with ALS. Realizing that his once-promised visits to Morrie never materialized after graduation, Mitch makes the journey to spend time with his old friend. What follows is a series of discussions between the two men on life's essential topics: love, work, aging, death, and the meaning of life.

Each chapter, structured around their Tuesday conversations, gives readers insights into Morrie's philosophies and perspectives on these existential themes, making it a reflective and deeply personal narrative. Morrie’s wisdom and kindness shine through as he faces his illness with grace, while Mitch reflects on the lessons he’s learning and how they contrast with his fast-paced, career-driven lifestyle.

Thoughts:

Never have I ever been hit so hard by some sentences in books, or caused me to reflect on life. It was a sucker punch.

It also reminded me of my friend, Bianca Vintola who died of Lupus disease back in 2020. She knew she was running out of time when she was still alive and I didn't understand at first why she was doing what she was doing; giving positive remarks and pushing her loved ones to do great things. Because like Mitch (the author), I was too naive and confused about death or someone with a disease that has no cure. I was hoping she was going to survive and live a normal life again. But she didn't. I CRIED reading Morrie's journey because he and Bianca were almost identical in voice and the way they look at life. The way they devote on things they love. The way they give comfort with words and left you in amazement.

Tuesday with Morrie makes you stop and reflect on life. It makes you think of your unsatisfied life and how you will achieve that goal which is true happiness.

Cause, let's be clear, we don't want to leave this world with regrets.

Some people lives, works the perfect job, have the perfect family and all, yet they are unsatisfied.

And then there are people who lives less yet they are satisfied. They surrounded by caring and loving souls. And some are in between.

This was a beautiful story and I definitely would recommend it if you haven't read it yet.

And always, always remember...LOVE WINS, LOVE ALWAYS WINS.
